Swatch Booklet

2018

Our point of sale never came back from the printers with a consistent orange. It might come back with a muddy orange or quite often there was too much red. In order to get it just right, we decided to make our own swatch booklet. That way our awesome print manager would always have a precise point of reference when attending our press checks.

Orange, you good?

Our orange values begun at C0 M75 Y100 K0. From there we just nudged the M and Y values until we were satisfied. Surprisingly it wasn’t just our values that could impact how the orange printed, how much ink was applied can shift the colour too. Without a point of reference our printers had no way of knowing if our orange was too red or too yellow. We settled on C0 M66 Y100 K0.

Very appealing.

After nailing orange we then perfected our other brand colours. Our purple shifted from C70 M90 Y0 K0 to C66 M90 Y0 K0 which isn’t a huge shift but it does make a difference.

Spot on.

We also made our own amaysim orange spot. We’d been using Pantone 165 C. But then discovered Ball & Doggett actually make a custom spots. Amazing!

The best name ever.

The machine used test our spot was called ORANGE PROOFER! It produces mini prints with offset inks.

Spectrocolorimeter.

This cool little machine reads accurate colour profiles to ensure consistency throughout the imaging workflow, from acquisition to output.

Final product.

Once we had all our colours nailed, we were ready to print our swatch booklet.

Light fast.

We also managed to create our own light fast spots. Orange fades pretty quickly in the Aussie sun. So now we can prevent POS turning yellow - particularly handy for pieces that will be in market for longer than a month.
